Description
The Belt of Venus over Casino Pier - The Belt of Venus and Earth's shadow at dusk over Seaside Heights and Seaside Park, New Jersey. The glowing lights of Casino Pier's Ferris wheel are visible from across the bay, as a cruise ship sails in the distance on the Atlantic Ocean.
This aerial photograph captures a beautiful twilight scene over the Jersey Shore. The most striking feature of the sky is the "Belt of Venus," a pinkish glow above the horizon that is caused by the backscattering of reddened sunlight after the sun has set. Below this pink band is the darker, bluish-gray "Earth's shadow," which is the shadow of the Earth cast upon the atmosphere. The contrast between these two bands creates a stunning gradient of color.
In the foreground, the peaceful waters of Barnegat Bay reflect the last light of the day. The landmass separating the bay from the ocean is Seaside Park and Seaside Heights. On the left side of the image, the iconic Casino Pier is illuminated, with its brightly lit Ferris wheel standing out against the darkening sky. To the right, a water tower and other buildings of the town are visible. Farther out on the ocean, a cruise ship sails away, a small beacon of light on the vast expanse of the water.
The image is a serene and atmospheric depiction of a natural phenomenon and a popular seaside destination.
This image is available in color and as a black and white.
