Description
Croton Dam is a dam on the Croton River in New York, United States.
It impounds the Croton Reservoir, which covers 1,000 acres (400 ha) and has a capacity of 27 billion gallons (106,000,000 m3).
The dam is located between Cortlandt and Ossining in southern Westchester County.
It was authorized by the U.S. Congress on January 13, 1932, as an adjunct to the New York City water supply system.
It was built by the city's Board of Water Supply in conjunction with its other large reservoirs at Rondout and Pepacton.
Construction began in December 1935 and was completed four years later at a cost of $17 million ($268 million in 2016 dollars).
The dam is 267 feet (81 m) high and 1,550 feet (472 m) long at its crest.
The top of the wall contains stone for ballast that helps stabilize it against erosion from wave action during storms.
